2006 SIERRA NEVADA
Our 2006 Summer Guitar Festival was a great success! With over 100 in attendance for each of two concerts by Craig Einhorn (www.unicornguitar.com) and Celino and Lito Romero (www.romeroguitarquartet.com), we did well for our first year. Craig Einhorn offered a wonderful performance supported by local musicians. The Romeros received three standing ovations and proved a worthy star act. For the Romero's encore dancer Sapphira performed with them. One audience member said "I feel sorry for anyone in Tahoe who didn't come to this concert!" Following are some photos!. Also, we thank classical guitarist and scholar Jan de Kloe, Larry Aynesmith, festival director, Micah Dunn, and Dave Davies, bass.

Marc Teicholz performed one of the best concerts we have ever seen on June 2, 2006 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Reno. His performance of Bach was astounding and in our opinion places him among the elite guitarists performing today. John Goddard, the Rector of the Episcopal Church, called Marc's performance "magical." If you want to raise the stature of classical guitar in your community, we recommend that you book Marc Teicholz in the best and most prominent music venues. Mr. Teicholz teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and at California State University, East Bay. SIERRA NEVADA GUITAR SOCIETY BENEFIT CONCERTS Three benefit concerts in July -- Trinity

SAFFIRE: THE AUSTRALIAN GUITAR QUARTET (www.saffire.com.au)
REVIEW On November 13, 2005 The Lake Tahoe Classic Guitar Society was fortunate to co-sponsor a concert by Saffire: The Australian Guitar Quartet. The show was a fundraiser for an Arts For the Schools program. Here is my review: Saffire is the greatest guitar act in all of the world. Let me qualify that. Occasionally I will write brief reviews of classical guitar acts or events. It isn't hard for me to write a good review for any guitar act that has basic competency and tries to make at least a little bit of music, as long as they're not pompous fools. As for proclaiming any act the greatest, it is only my current opinion. One could say the same of LAGQ, the Romeros, David Russell, Ana Vidovic, John Williams, the list goes on. But I have never heard any guitar act in the last few years that plays with such an incredibly cohesive and vibrant ensemble. Saffire's talent is immense, their arrangements top-notch and the compositions that have been written for them are some of the best. Karin Schaupp is quite beautiful and immensely talented. Slava Grigoryan is immensely talented, I'd like to hear him and/or Karin solo sometime. Gareth Koch is a major talent who is the central "machine" and arranger. Original Saffire member Anthony Field recently withdrew from the group. According to what I heard, he didn't like touring and parted amicably. Leonard Grigoryan is new to the group. He more than held down his parts. He's been playing since he was four years old, his brother is Slava, his father is a famous concert violinist, so I don't think there is much to worry about. A new composition by the Australian composer Nigel Westlake called "Six Fish" is an instant guitar classic. Propelled by Koch, Saffire brings tasteful flamenco arrangements which reach classical standards of arrangement but retain the fire. I don't know of any flamenco-inspired music by other guitarists which reaches this level of perfection, especially Saffire's Rumba Nostalgica, originally by Juan Martin. They play some Aussie-Celtic pieces that are quite vibrant. Saffire even plays an arrangement of a Deep Purple rock song. Some criticize this although it's great music! If any guitar act in the world becomes associated with a new eternal masterpiece it just might be Saffire, in addition to the acts I mentioned above. Saffire's live ensemble playing is every bit as exceptional as their recorded music. This is unusual in the guitar world. Saffire will not return to the USA until 2007. We may not get them in Tahoe again as they are a major act and usually play to audiences of 500 to 2000 rather than 150 at Tahoe. In the meantime, if you are curious about my proclamation you can order their two magnificent CDs. They are not yet available in the USA but can be ordered through Saffire's web site: www.saffire.com.au. Larry Aynesmith
ISAAC BUSTOS, (www.bustosguitarist.com) originally from Nicaragua, appeared in concert at the Incline Village Library on September 17, 2005. Isaac has won many prestigious Guitar Competitions and was recently appointed to the faculty of Texas A&M University. Local Chamber Symphony conductor James Rawie called Isaac "one of the best classical guitarists I have ever seen." THANKS TO ANA

On Monday July 5, 2004 Visiting Musical Artist Muriel Anderson performed a small impromptu classic guitar concert for a private audience at a coffeehouse in Incline Village, Nevada. Muriel is the first woman ever to win the National Guitar Fingerpicking Championship. Her arrangements featured everything from John Philip Sousa for guitar to an imitation of a complete bluegrass band on a single guitar.More information about Muriel is available at www.murielanderson.com. ANA VIDOVIC CONCERT A GREAT SUCCESS! Our concert on Sunday April 4, 2004 featuring Ana Vidovic was a great success! We SOLD OUT the room, the audience was very enthusiastic and appreciative, and we definitely whetted the local appetite for more classic guitar performances. We will hope to bring Ana back to Tahoe next year. We also thank the performers who helped make the master class a success: John Mahoney, Grace Higgins, Andrew Ohren, Larry Aynesmith, Edith Isidoro-Mills, Micah Dunn, Christopher Smith, and Sven Rainey. We also thank Jano Lukac, John Christopherson, and Diane for their help with the concert. Click here to return to Sierra Nevada Guitar Society Home Page
